05 Nov What’s great about Colchester?
Colchester is one of main towns in Essex, but it’s well known as the oldest town in Britain, initially the capital of Roman Britain. Colchester is full of history and things to do, whether you’re staying around for a weekend or you’re about to move there and not sure what to expect.
Which is why we decided to write down this quick guide on why Colchester is a great town.
Enjoy the read!
The Town Centre
Like Chester, a Roman wall surrounds Colchester’s town centre. If you’re visiting Colchester, you can still see most of the Roman wall, which is quite well preserved. Fun fact: it’s the best-preserved Roman wall in the UK!
But it’s not all about the past. The Roman wall sure makes the town unique, but the centre is vibrant and full of exiting things to do. There are plenty of shops to go around, like Culver Square and Lion Walk shopping centres. Shopping and window shopping are great fun, and when your stomach rumbles you can indulge on some tasty food. Colchester offers some great restaurants, from chains like Nando’s to locals like The Pitta and The Old Siege House Bar & Brasserie.
Colchester Zoo
Probably the most well-known attraction in Colchester is the Zoo. Ideal for a day out with family and kids, or if you’re an animal lover this is the perfect day out for you. It is the home to many endangered species. In addition to the different enclosures, the Zoo also hosts exciting family events such as Halloween and African Photography Safari experiences.
Location
Colchester is in an ideal location; it goes without saying. Essex is a vibrant county, with many towns such as Chelmsford, Clacton-on-Sea and Braintree. It’s also very close to London, Ipswich and Cambridge. The sea is quite close too, with many picturesque views. What’s there not to love?
This is only a short list of great ideas on how to spend your time in Colchester.
